Wilo UK – a leading manufacturer of water pumps and pump systems has won the Environmental Contribution of the Year accolade at the 2022 Pump Industry Awards. Wilo was recognised for its work with Northumbrian Water at Broken Scar Treatment Works.

The Environmental Contribution of the Year award celebrates the pump product, system or service that has made a significant contribution to environmental issues, such as energy savings, emissions control, noise reduction or life cycle costs.

The project that earned the major industry honour involved Wilo UK working with Northumbrian Water to replace pumps, reduce operating costs and improve reliability at its Broken Scar Treatment Works. The site supplies the city of Darlington with 8.8 million litres of water per day and operates 24 hours a day.

Northumbrian Water was facing challenges including power supply and accessibility to the well itself and its existing pump was one year old and costing £64,683 per year to operate, whilst being responsible for 612.8 mtCO2 each year.

Wilo borehole engineers attended the site and outlined how operations could be optimised to reduce power consumption and associated CO2 whilst improving security. A revised design Wilo K Series borehole was installed reducing energy consumption to £34,192 per year which equated to a reduction in associated CO2 of 47%.

The K Series offers a best-in-class pump efficiency of up to 88.2% and is ideal for energy-efficient water supply in virtually all processes.

The ZETOS borehole pump was chosen thanks to its high efficiency and long lifespan, as well as predicted operational and CO2 savings, which proved to be even better than predicted. The new pump also reduced the cost per million litres of pumped water by 47% and has demonstrated a tenfold reduction in wear rate.

Lee Tebbatt, Managing Director of Wilo UK, says: “We’re honoured to receive this important industry award for our work with Northumbrian Water which has made a real difference in reducing operating costs, energy, water and CO2.

“Winning the Environmental Contribution of the Year accolade for the second year running demonstrates that Wilo is taking serious, measurable action to help customers be as sustainable as possible and reduce energy and CO2 emissions.

“At Wilo, we’re continuing to work towards our mission of developing user-friendly, energy-efficient, high-performance products and services that benefit people, organisations and the environment.”

Wilo was nominated for a total of 3 awards this year and were finalists in two other categories, including Manufacturer of the Year and Product of the Year for the Wilo-K10 Borehole Pump.
