A new study from IMS Research has confirmed PROFINET’s leading position, alongside Ethernet/IP, among the globally established Industrial Ethernet solutions, both having a market share of 30%.
‘The World Market for Industrial Ethernet & Fieldbus Technologies – 2013 Edition’ study describes the solution promoted by PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) as a comprehensive Industrial Ethernet solution that covers all areas up to and including high-performance drives.
Besides PROFINET the leading group includes Ethernet/IP and Modbus TCP/IP. Together, this group covers more than three-quarters of the market. The EtherCAT and Powerlink variants, which focus mainly on drive technology, have a market share of 7% and 9%, respectively, according to the study.
The development of PROFIsafe has proven to be especially positive. With an increase of newly installed nodes in the field of 50%, one-in-ten new PROFIBUS or PROFINET devices is currently equipped with PROFIsafe, says the study. According to IMS, the market share of PROFIsafe is 41%, putting it in a leading position for safety-related communication profiles.
