Cooper Crouse-Hinds has recently gained new ATEX and IECEx approvals for its Ex-e (increased safety) GHG 410 range of safety and isolating transformers. These transformers are suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Available in power consumptions from 63VA up to 1,200VA, the single phase Ex-e safety and isolating transformers are approved for use in potentially explosive atmospheres to BVS 11 ATEX E195 U and IECEx BVS 11.0087 U.

Safety and isolating transformers are used for the power supply of control circuits. The use of these transformers is stipulated in the EN 61558-2-1 standard. This requires the use of safety and isolation transformers if more than five operating coils are used in one circuit.

The benefits of using safety and isolation transformers are that they safeguard the application against direct and indirect contact – they allow easy modification of different mains voltages – and they provide short circuit current limiting to protect the operating equipment.

The Ex-e GHG safety and isolating transformers are suitable for use in ambient temperatures from -55°C to 130°C. The Ex-e transformer needs to be mounted into a separate certified empty enclosure with IP66 protection. The terminals on the transformers are separately certified to PTB 01 ATEX 1049 U, PTB 01 ATEX 1050 U, or PTB 01 ATEX 1051 U.
