The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) has today launched its latest Leaders’ Forum report, focused on FM compliance, as part of a campaign to provide greater clarity around the issue of compliance within the built environment.

The complexity around compliance is a significant issue for the facilities management sector, where service providers and clients are often unsure how to achieve statutory compliance. As there is no universally-agreed framework or approach to determining whether an organisation is, or is not, compliant, BIFM wants to instigate an ongoing nationwide discussion by capturing the views of people within the industry. As a first step, the report aims to arrive at a clearer understanding of which FM activities are essential in order to be compliant. The paper also looks to distinguish these tasks from other FM activities that may or may not be required by clients. Following on from this, BIFM intends to publish a Good Practice Guide to compliance.

Peter Brogan, BIFM’s head of Research and Insights commented: “There is no universally agreed framework approach to determining whether an organisation is or is not compliant; our national debate will therefore be hugely beneficial in capturing, and consequently sharing the views of those in the FM industry on what constitutes compliance.”
