After significant demand from AEMT members, a new course for the repair of rotating machines to international standards is being prepared for the end of the year. The course will go through the guidelines of the rewritten International Standard IEC 60034-23, expected to be published early next year. The course is currently being revised and updated by Dr Martin Killeen, ready for the first course due to take place at the end of this year, or early next year.

Those who would benefit from the course can join a significant number of companies becoming new members.

The comprehensive re-write of the international repair, overhaul and reclamation of rotating electrical machinery standard – 60034-23 has included content from the AEMT/EASA Good Practice Guide and many other reference documents, to ensure that repairs maintain their rated energy efficiency after repair. The standard is in the final stages of maintenance and is expected to be published in 2018.

The course, will very much be focused around this new standard, and look at the issues that were raised by the AEMT/EASA Effect of Repair/Rewinding on Motor Efficiency project.

The course will be aimed at repair shop management and personnel and identifies the repair processes which ensure that the rated efficiency of a machine can be maintained. It will also outline in simple terms the recommended tests and methods during each process.

Topics covered will include repair or replacing equipment: environmental issues including maintaining efficiency during the repair and rewind process; recording machine details; dismantling the equipment; removing old windings; cleaning stator cores; choosing a replacement winding; rewinding a stator; impregnation; re-assembly; and testing.
